Rush in Rio

Being a fairly loyal YYZ-based Rush fan, purchasing this DVD was easy. I was not prepared to get shivers down my spine when I watched this DVD. My DVD concert collection is still smaller than my laser disc collection – I own Show of Hands LD and love that, so Rush in Rio is clearly on a higher level.
The Rush starved crowd, the getting of the concert set up right up to the last second (watch the Disk 2 documentary first to build your anticipation, and the incredible energy put into the performance is breathtaking.
I have sat in the front row and the back row at a Rush concert. Sitting in the front row is infinitely better, and the incredible camera work here puts you in the front row all the time – every song seems to show a shot of Lifeson’s sweat beads on his playing arm.
Two things stand out in this concert – one is the incredible guitar playing of Alex. I haven’t really noticed before, but perhaps the near-dedicated camera to him emphasizes it. His playing is remarkable. He stands out in every song. The expression of his face, his incredible endurance, all make this performance the best I’ve seen. Not to take away from the others, but there’s always one who rises above.
Second thing that stands out is the incredible playlist. What a long show! They have such a wealth of music to draw upon, this list was very representative. The band is as tight at the end as they are in the beginning. What fun they are having! The happy smiles that come from 40000 adoring fans reflect in their faces.
I had no problem with the technical aspect – perhaps sometimes Ged’s vocals were not as loud as could have been (he still hits some of the impossible high notes). The video screen was huge and crystal clear, even on film. The light show was incredible on film too. The DVD puts you there.
In a two words, buy it! You will NOT be disappointed.
