Native lands and Wal-mart

An interesting story on the latest Wal-mart victory.  The most annoying part of the deal is the incredible exemption from our overbearing government that natives have.

This month, however, in Canada, Wal-Mart hit pay dirt. Two native bands in B.C. agreed to host a Wal-Mart on their traditional lands. On reserve land, there are no unions, pay equity provisions or environmental regulations. Native law prevails. On native land, rezoning applications are unnecessary.

Business would be so much more vibrant without the strict government controls the rest of us plebes have to suffer under.

Two tier health care?  Heck, we’ve got two-tier citizenship here in Canada.

Wal-mart good, Canada bad

Here’s a story that may explain American attitudes towards Canadians.

The elderly woman walked into the Kinston Wal-Mart on Tuesday afternoon a week ago and asked to send some money to Canada.

Arctic fronts and tele-scammers, not to mention Bush-bashers.

Good to see minimum wage people with values.

Always unplug

More proof that it’s always a good idea to unplug any electrical device that you are working on.

A plumber working on a house in Frankley was trapped on Thursday by an electric toilet, whilst trying to repair it.

Sky is falling at 1 Yonge

We all know the Star is a Liberal mouthpiece, but I really don’t see the motivation behind scaring the citizens of Ontario into dimming their lights and walking to work.

How would you react if you were to wake up tomorrow morning to discover that hydro, gas and oil prices had all doubled or tripled overnight?

As a matter of fact, the Liberals have actually been sensible about restarting nuclear.  The only problem is, no word on further privatizing of the industry, to get the meddling government from screwing it up even more.

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of SUV bashing.

The public would, no doubt, protest loudly against any fuel taxes, claiming that they would seriously damage our standard of living. But all that claim really says is that people do not want to give up their SUVs

Does the Star not understand that SUV taxpayers already pay more than their share of gas tax, because of the usurious at-the-pump toll?  Does the Star not understand that a good chunk of the limitless health care dollar comes from the average smuck who gets up earlier (because the government won’t build roads) every day to go to work, burning gas and lining the government’s coffers?

Probably not.  The Star wants us all living in 50 story communes, complete with energy rationing.

Sorry, I don’t believe in junk science, and I don’t believe the world is running out of power, fossil fuel or not.  The markets are too smart, smarter than any government planner.

Line your pockets

I don’t have much time for monopolies, including Canada Post.  Ouellet should be fired - now.  He’s already been sitting at home collecting big bucks for months.  Do you think we could have avoided the annual stamp increase/rip-off had someone else been watching the till?

Andre Ouellet should be fired outright as Canada Post president because he has failed to document or justify expense claims totalling more than $2 million, questionable hiring decisions, and unfair contracting practices, says the Conservative chair of the public accounts committee.

Robbing the wrong guy

No-one said robbers have to be smart.

The experience, during which he said he thought he and the others might be killed, left him counting his blessings that he was able to react like he did and not remain a victim.

“I just did what I had to do. When he came in here with a shotgun and no mask on his face I didn’t think he planned to leave any survivors,” Shema said.

In Canada, the store owner would probably be charged.

More on the culling

More discussion and comment on selective abortion, and how our views of abortion today are as incoherent as slavery views were back in Abe’s day.

Our society’s policies on abortion now are incoherent. At the same place and at the same time, an entire class of human beings, those yet to be born, are considered either human beings or subhumans, either subject to the same right to life and protections that the rest of us are or nothing more than the “products of conception” subject,

It’s off already!

Ok, ok, my desktop is now off when I’m not using it.

Wired reports that there’s no longer a reason to keep your computer always on:

“IT folks used to advise leaving computers on all the time to avoid wear and tear. But components are much more reliable now, and new research shows there’s no reason not to go green and turn PCs off when not in use

The Crusades are coming (again)

Warren says the 9/11 commission - surprise! - misses the point.  So do the Democrats.  Clearly, GWB (because of his beliefs?) gets it.  That’s why if he doesn’t win in November, the world will be that much closer to, well, who wants to think about it?

We actually have a recrudescence—in a novel form, but with historical parallels—of this essentially religious ideal of a Jihad against all the infidels.

Bush the terminator

Mark says the choice for the world is clear this November: Terminator or girly-man.  I’ll take Bush with all his alleged warts any day.

But in an odd way this distinction does encapsulate the choice in November. If we revert to Arnie’s terms, Bush is a terminator: he terminated Saddam and he terminated the Taleban, and if he’s re-elected there’ll likely be a couple more before he’s through. John F. Kerry, on the other hand, is a girlie man.

More on the Syrians

The Syrian band on the one way flight gets more suspicious by the day.  It also sounds like US agency PC and ultra-sensitivity is getting in the way of common sense.

The Syrian singer of a band that was detained by the FBI’s Terrorism Task Force for suspicious activity during a recent flight to Los Angeles has written about the “glorification” of suicide bombers to liberate Palestine.

Corrosive popcorn propaganda

A review of Moore’s now over $100 million dollar movie.

What’s wrong with Fahrenheit 9/11?

Michael Moore claims that Bush is manipulating the American people. But who is manipulating whom?

Pipe dream stem cells

Little Ronny Reagan made a speech last night.  His delivery was good and his passion there, but his science was way off. Way off.

Though embryonic stem cell research advocates euphemistically refer to the current state of research as an “early stage,” the unfortunate reality is the goal of embryonic stem cell therapies is, at this point, more accurately described as a pipe dream.
