Whithering families

When the basic building block of society is no longer, one can only wonder about society’s future.

Forget about the white dress, flowers and the stress of a guest list—more couples are choosing to live common-law instead of getting married, according to a new Canadian survey…On the downside, common-law couples are four times more likely to break up than married couples, according to the report.

A cautionary tale

More proof that the government is one of the worst managers of money.

SKYDOME—the white elephant that cost mostly taxpayers $600 million to build—has been sold to the Blue Jays for a bargain basement $25 million, less than the going price of a mansion in Oakville…It’s bizarre that a top player could have bought his own stadium, said Tasha Kheiriddin, with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

“It’s disgusting. There’s little taxpayers can do except point to this as a cautionary tale against subsidizing sports franchises,” Kheiriddin said.

It’s amazing people are willing to send more and more of their money to have the government squander it.

Auto-sight

Hard to believe Toronto is run by car-haters when you read stories like this.

A NEW YORK TIMES report predicting that Ontario would surpass Michigan in auto production this year is pessimistic, industry watchdog Dennis DesRosiers says. With Ontario plants expected to assemble about 2.7 million light vehicles in 2004, Ward’s Automotive said the gap between Michigan and Ontario could be about 89,000 units.

Toronto should embrace the auto – celebrate it – it owes its livelihood to it.

Welcome GWB

It’s worthy to note that since Ottawa’s Liberals are finally learning to be hospitable to the leader of the free world, the most memorable quote was from GWB himself.

Bush says his reception was warm and hospitable. And at a news conference, he offered his thanks to Canadians who waved to him—as he put it—“with all five fingers.”

Maybe if Canada stops hacking at the Bush administration they may get some of their issues solved.

Good to see the rent-a-crowds were essentially a bust.
