Grieving Nichola

One of the absolute best articles I’ve ever read on why women should never be on the front lines of a war.

I have been grieving for Nichola Goddard, the first Canadian woman ever to die fighting in battle. For some reason this struck me as more than the death of someone who was clearly a wonderful person and a highly capable soldier…

…That is, for the intuitive knowledge that civilization comes to a grinding halt – we all die – if women, the mothers of us all, die out. So, it seems (again so strongly intuitively) that although it is a noble tragedy for a nation to lose a single life in battle, it is a kind of double tragedy to lose a woman’s life.

Big kid

Here’s the posterboy for obesity.

If there is a ‘face of child obesity’, it is six-year-old, 15-stone Dzhambulat Khatokhov. Sheer size has made this boy from a poor Russian family a hero in his home town and an object of fascination in the west.

Idol thoughts

Sad to admit, but I did watch Idol last night, and was impressed.  I think Alan liked it too.

“American Idol” finale, the biggest waste of time of each TV season—especially this season, when everyone and their brother knew Taylor Hicks was going to win

Consciousness of being beloved

Plunging birth rates may have more to do with lack of faith in the future of one’s country than anything else, says this report.

No one knows. But by not having children, people are voting against the future—their countries’ and, perhaps, their own. It is easy to imagine the sacrifices and disappointments of raising children. It is hard, try as people might, to imagine the intense joys and selfish pleasures. People ignore Adam Smith’s keen insight: “[The] chief part of human happiness arises from the consciousness of being beloved.”

Keeping scaring us

This Jeff Rubin guys makes a living trying to incite panic.

Happy campers with their gas-guzzling trailers and SUVs have a reason to fear the pumps this summer.

The cry wolf principle should apply to him by now.  My suggestion?  Ignore the guy.  He’s usually wrong.

Too good to be true card

For all you whiners who can’t take the price of gas - go get the Canadian Tire Gas Advantage MasterCard.

Save at least 2 cents and up to 10 cents* off every litre of gas you purchase at participating Canadian Tire Gas Bars.

Swipe the card at the pump and watch the litre price turn back INSTANTLY - up to 10 cents per litre.

I’ve been using it for 2 weeks now, and love it.  To top off the 10c/litre off I get (last week I paid 79c a litre), you get Sobey’s dollars.

Clearly they are banking on you to carry a balance, otherwise, I have no idea how they make money.  The gas companies insist they only make 1-2% - so something doesn’t add up.

In the mean time, get it while it lasts.  I can’t see it lasting that long.

Anarchy rules

Anytime you want to see what anarchy is like, just cast your eyes over to a native protest.

At several points, dozens of protestors from both sides tangled in fistfights and shoving matches as hapless OPP officers struggled to break up the fights and keep the two sides apart. As they shoved screaming protestors away from each other shouts and insults filled the air.

Imagine living in a province where police have no authority over enforcing the law, thanks to endless political interference.  No need to imagine, we have it here in Ontario thanks to Ipperwash.

When the police are afraid, YOU need to be afraid.

What’s the attraction?

I never understood people that camp, especially in this weekend’s weather.

I also never understood those that swim and fish in this weather, when the downside is death.

Anti-SAHM Studies Continue

The daycare propaganda machine is really stretching for studies to justify moms not raising their own children full time, to wit.

According to new research carried out in Britain, working mothers enjoy better health than full-time housewives. Despite the stress working mothers face by holding down a job, dealing with childcare, housework and striving to keep the family happy.
