The Rockford Files

Image via Wikipedia

Just finished watching a few more The Rockford Files. This has to be my favorite series.  So far, one of my favorite episodes of all time is Black Mirror, episode #509.  Recently, I noticed you can watch the episodes online, on a service called hulu.com.  To access it from Canada, you need to use a program called Hotspot Shield. Hotspot Shield is apparently recommended if you use your laptop in a public place.

A piece of Toronto history

My Godfather’s father died this month.  Judging by the size of his obit, he led an amazing life.  His surviving wife, Amy McLean, also came from a deep-rooted Canadian family, who also have a fascinating link to Toronto history.  The William Davies Co., , Sir Joseph Flavelle – if you click the links to their wikipedia articles, you get an amazing view of local history.

An artistic figure in the commercial world, Clair Stewart was one of the earliest and most significant graphic designers in this country.

Blowing in the wind

Micon wind turbine, Dithmarschen.

A sensible article on the folly that is wind power.

On Toronto‘s waterfront stands a mighty wind turbine, its blades rotating lazily in the breeze (at least sometimes). It’s a monument to good intentions and civic virtue.

What a game

Oshawa Generals

Image via Wikipedia

You don’t have to spend big bucks to see a good live hockey game.  We took in a great game today, complete with a great Remembrance Day tribute to Red Tilson.

The Oshawa Generals have a very special evening planned on Sunday and they are looking for your help to make it a success.

The great part of this game is you can get a good seat, and the game moves fast, since there are no commercial breaks to wait minutes for.

Sucking sound again

That giant sucking sound is starting to sound more like a typhoon.

Canada’s largest auto parts company is shutting down two Toronto-area plants, with the loss of 850 jobs, in the latest blow to the beleaguered Ontario manufacturing economy.

Wheels.ca – Magna closes Aurora, Newmarket plants – Canada’s Most Trusted Auto Resource.

Let’s hope the teachers of Ontario can put their ear to the rail and get the message that their 3% a year offer is already way too much.

Tether 3G Iphone to Vista on Fido

iPhone

Image via Wikipedia

Well, after a couple of failed attempts, it looks like I was able to tether my Fido Iphone 3G to my Vista laptop.  First, I found this howto site to download the QuickPwn 2.2 for windows torrent to jailbreak my Iphone.  Then, I found this site to do the tethering.

I wasted many hours googling to find recent and accurate information, so I am blogging here to save you the aggravation.

Maybe now I can cancel my Telus unlimited plan, which is costing me $92/month and hardly used.

The Palin myth

Against the grain, we read that Sarah Palin did more to help John McCain with a the conservative right then hinder.  Watching her on Larry King last week, I can’t help thinking she’ll be more than a footnote in history.  She is so telegenic, I can’t take my eyes off her.  I keep telling myself that with the right advisors, she can learn – just like GWB.

Enter Palin, who was embraced with a bear hug by the party’s conservative base. All of a sudden, cultural conservatives were thrilled at the chance to put “one of their own” in the White House.

As the famous Robert Frost said, “good fences make good neighbors”.  Since my old fence was leaning at a 30 degree angle for past few years, I my neighbor and I decided to fix it.

After spending many weeks finding a fence company that actually returned phone calls, I found Derek at A. D. Holmes Fence and Deck. Not only did he return or answer every phone call promptly and courteously, he also built a solid fence.

Call him if you need a fence and live in the Toronto area.

Another year, another attempt to keep a poppy on my shirt for more than a few minutes.

We can get a lander on Mars, and we can’t design a pin that can keep the poppy on a shirt? I’d gladly pay a bit more to get one of those pins with a clip on the other side of the shirt, so I can keep wearing my poppy.

Someone’s got to do something and sell some decent poppies to the Legion!
