Two trees, three hundred thousand dollars

The automakers want how much to keep their business floating?  Sorry, they’ll have to slash a whole lot more before they’re going to get the majority of taxpayers on their side.

Christmas-wise, note the two majestic trees that rise, at a guess, 40 feet skyward. “Paid $300,000 for the two trees,” says a maintenance worker, adding, “It’s all re-rod inside of there.” Three hundred thou seems a lot. “That was when everything was going good,” Mr. Maintenance says.

Rats scrambling

Charles Ponzi (March 3, 1882–January 18, 1949)...

As the financial ship continues to sink, and the shaky companies begin to crack, the rats are scrambling.  The ponzi schemes, of which I was a victim of 16 years ago, start to collapse.

Bernard Madoff, founder and president of a New York firm that invested funds for wealthy individuals, hedge funds and other institutions, was charged with operating what he told employees was a long-running $50 billion Ponzi scheme in what may be one of the largest frauds in history.

Why no bailout

I haven’t said much about the bailout, but my opinion is very similar to this one.

Many people are asking: Why can’t these companies go bankrupt and reorganize like everyone else? In bankruptcy court, the process allowsthe auto industry to negotiate with creditors, stakeholders and unions.

Cafe Hayek: Harsanyi on the Czar.

The next logical question is: what should we give Toyota and Honda?  Isn’t that what socialism is all about?  Equality for all, including car companies?

The worst part about it is subsidizing $50/hr employees, some of whom work in the rubber room, a place where laid off workers go to play cards.

Where’s the salt?

My question to those in charge of clearing our roads, a function as basic as picking up the garbage: where are the salt trucks on the 401, DVP, and other major highways around the GTA?  As recently as a few years ago, plows and salters were out around 4am, just before the crush of traffic starts at 5am.  Lately, these cleaners are not out till well after 5, perhaps closer to 6.  By this time, enough dunderheads have hit the roads to cause chaos.  The costs of the the havoc are far greater than paying the boys to come out an hour earlier.

A crash involving three tractor-trailers and several other vehicles at Hwy. 401 and Allen Rd. has shut down all eastbound express lanes of the highway and left three people seriously injured.

Obama unveils 21st Century New Deal

Something tells me that if Harper does something along these lines, he will stay PM.  It`s time Harper realizes that Canadians are always looking to America for inspiration, and expect all the good things American to come here eventually.  It`s hard to argue about this kind of stimulus.

On Saturday, Barack Obama pledged the largest new investment in roads and bridges since President Dwight D. Eisenhower built the Interstate system in the 1950′s.

OJ is finally going where he belongs – into the hole.

You can’t stay above the law forever, it seems.  OJ never stopped trying to.

“We are thrilled, and it’s a bittersweet moment,” Fred Goldman said. “It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs.”

$2 an hour – good luck competing

That giant sucking sound means $2/hour for that decent paying job here in Toronto.  Good luck seeing that closed factory opening up any time soon.

What Toronto has lost – jobs that paid $18 an hour – is being won here in the form of entry-level work that pays the equivalent of $2 per hour.

Insanely sad

This stabbing story is upsetting on so many counts, it’s hard to know where to begin.  I’m not sure who’s still alive either, but whoever is deserves your financial support.  Can’t think of needier kids right now.  Here’s some info on donating.

The father of the family who was attacked and stabbed at an Oshawa birthday party last Saturday died in hospital this morning.

Goodnite, Mr. Rogers

As annoyed as I am about Rogers for just being the monopoly that it is, it’s hard not to have enormous respect for someone who built so much, against enormous odds.  How sad that he didn’t make it to see his latest dream, a regular season NFL game in Canada.  I’m sure he tried.

Rogers’ hunger for success, combined with an ability to envision technological change years before his competitors (and a tolerance for debt) lifted his business from one fledgling radio station into a $25 billion Canadian institution.
