The Fall of GM – a visual guide

GM is in trouble, and unless they remove lots of these containers, the bailout probably won’t help.

GM has many woes, the least of which is a shortfall of money, so why do people think that an infusion of cash will do anything but prolong the agony?

So here it is, a visual guide to why GM won’t be around much longer. Unless ofcourse they can actually form a game plan to get some of these metaphorical shipping containers off their backs. Another thing I wanted to stress is that the conversation about the decline of General Motors involves singular finger pointing. “It’s the unions”, “It’s management”. Bottom line is you will need a lot of fingers because the root causes are plenty and the cumulative effect is what’s taking this ship down.

A horrifically inspirational story

One of my favorite shows, 20/20, had an amazing story on a little girl who beat the odds.  Go check the website below and watch for yourself.   It’s a story of good over evil.

bbh“The first thing I thought was, oh my God, my legs are cut off, I couldn’t feel them,” Brittney, now 16, said of the attack.

Stabbed and paralyzed as a child, Brittney Bergeron has a promising future.

The other incredible story is the one of her adoptive parents, the Himels.  What an amazing couple.  Their huge sacrifice restores one’s faith in humanity.

Blame Canada Geese for US Air Crash

Cold winters, now geese.  Another reason for the Americans to blame Canada!

It’s time to kill the geese.

The lunacy of windpower

David Frum with more on the insane costs of wind power.

The general conclusion: However costly, however uneconomic, however outright irrational you might have imagined windpower to be – the reality is even worse. Some samples:

My old buddy Dunford has more on the Windhustlers.

After all, these friends of the Ontario government–and numbered companies who’d like to be buddies of the government–will be subsidized and tax-breaked up the yin-yang to erect 40-storey wind turbines all over the Algonquin boondocks. (Turbines sounds much better than windmills, dude. Very high tech.)

$1.06 an apple

I guess the July price of oil has caught up with the price of fruit.

Sad thing is that the price of an apple is more than the price of a candy bar. This is the untold story of this recession: the poor will resort to more affordable junk food and get fatter and sicker.

WASHINGTON - SEPTEMBER 18: The U.S. Securitie...

After 9/11 happened, no one from the FAA was fired. That tells the public that the system of monitoring planes was just fine. When Madoff madoff (a new verb) with all the money, the SEC was there the whole time and saw nothing wrong. No one to this day has been fired from the SEC. See a pattern? No accountablity. If a company lost a few billion, the whole executive suite would be locked out and jailed. Government agencies are there to protect themselves first, and the public second.

How did so many smart people – including some Canadian hedge fund investors and charities – fall into the trap? Were there any warning signs that should have been heeded?
