You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I’ll pay you $50. Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house.”

Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, “Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?”

Worthington thinks Palin has only helped the slightly wooden McCain – and caused him to open up a bit, and tell us what really motivates him.

This is an exciting concept – getting everyone on the McCain them to help the country. Let’s face it, many get into politics to do just that, but the system changes them. That’s the truth about all organizations. They are very unkind to mavericks.

“They broke me,” he said, and recalled fellow prisoners giving him emotional support. “I was blessed by this misfortune as I served in the company of heroes … every day they fought for me … I was never the same again.

“I was not my own man any more, I was my country’s. My country saved me, and I will fight for her so long as I draw breath, so help me God.”

To some this may sound corny, but it’s what motivates John McCain. Few hearing him could doubt his sincerity. He and Gov. Palin seem to have done the improbable: Unite the Republican party behind a leader who will cross the aisle to persuade opponents to work on behalf of the country.
